Les langues africaines sont encore rarement enseignées à l école, encore moins au collège et au lycée, et assez peu à l université. La question de la transmission de ces langues et des cultures qu elles véhiculent est d autant plus d actualité. Nous présentons ici le cas d une langue transfrontalière de très grande extension géographique, le peul, à travers une série d articles qui illustrent la richesse de cette problématique, à la confluence de la linguistique et de la littérature. Henry Tourneux (LLACAN/CNRS) montre qu à l est de l aire peule (Cameroun), de nombreux termes empruntés il y a plusieurs siècles au soninké, langue de Mauritanie et du Mali, sont toujours bien présents dans le fulfulde contemporain. Abdourahmane Diallo (Francfort et Bayreuth) illustre la variabilité dialectale dans la syntaxe. Aliou Mohamadou (LLACAN/CNRS / Université Paris Inalco) présente la stratégie lexicographique basée sur l analyse intégrale de corpus qui lui a permis de réaliser un Dictionnaire des mots grammaticaux du peul (2014). Rudolf Leger (Francfort) invite le lecteur à l accompagner dans sa découverte du monde des proverbes dans la région de Gombé (Nord-Nigeria). La vitalité de la littérature en langue peule est illustrée par Alpha Ousmane Barry (Bordeaux Montaigne), Ursula Baumgardt, Mélanie Bourlet et Marie Lorin (LLACAN/CNRS / Université Paris Inalco) qui s intéressent, en complémentarité, à la littérature orale (l épopée) ainsi qu à l écriture littéraire et à la question très actuelle du rôle d Internet dans la transmission culturelle peule. Abdourahmane Diallo, de l Université de Sonfonia (Conakry, Guinée) est rattaché à l Institut für Afrikanistik de l Université de Francfort-sur-le- Main où il enseigne la langue peule. Il vient de publier une étude de sociolinguistique : Les Langues de Guinée (Karthala, 2014).

Il faut quelque audace aujourd'hui pour rappeler la clameur de Valmy, car _ à droite comme à gauche _ il n'est pas politiquement correct de parler de la nation (on préfère invoquer la République): à l'heure de Maastricht, ce serait une idée dépassée. On craint aussi et surtout de faire écho aux slogans des nationalistes à propos de l'immigration. C'est justement pour ne pas laisser cette idée-force aux mains de l'extrême droite dans une conjoncture lourde de dangers qu'Yves Lacoste a entrepris une approche nouvelle de l'idée de nation. C'est une idée géopolitique parce qu'elle pose _ en France et ailleurs _ des problèmes de territoire, de langue, de pouvoir; elle s'est transformée depuis deux siècles en fonction des rivalités de la droite et de la gauche et des points de vue que l'on porte sur l'histoire. Il existe plusieurs visions implicites de la nation, et il faut tenir compte des différents courants identitaires, notamment de la présence de quatre millions de musulmans: ils sont pour la plupart nés en France et eux aussi parlent le français. C'est parce que s'accélèrent les effets de la mondialisation et que se mettent en place les pouvoirs financiers de l'Union européenne, mais aussi parce que s'aggravent les phénomènes d'exclusion et que se propagent des mouvements xénophobes qu'il est plus que jamais nécessaire de se soucier de la nation. Il est urgent qu'une conception historique évolutive l'emporte sur des slogans dangereux pour la démocratie et le développement de notre pays. Le destin de cette idée géopolitique fondamentale qu'est la nation n'est assurément pas terminé. Yves Lacoste, géographe, spécialiste de géopolitique, est professeur à l'université de Paris-VIII. Il est le fondateur et le directeur d'Hérodote, revue de géographie et de géopolitique, et a dirigé les trois volumes de Géopolitiques des régions française (Fayard, 1986).

The Call of the Wild is a novel by Jack London published in 1903. The story is set in the Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush—a period when strong sled dogs were in high demand. The novel's central character is a dog named Buck, a domesticated dog living at a ranch in California as the story opens. Stolen from his home and sold into the brutal existence of an Alaskan sled dog, he reverts to atavistic traits. Buck is forced to adjust to, and survive, cruel treatments and fight to dominate other dogs in a harsh climate. Eventually he sheds the veneer of civilization, relying on primordial instincts and lessons he learns, to emerge as a leader in the wild. London lived for most of a year in the Yukon collecting material for the book. The story was serialized in the Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903; a month later it was released in book form. The novel’s great popularity and success made a reputation for London. Much of its appeal derives from the simplicity with which London presents the themes in an almost mythical form. As early as 1908 the story was adapted to film and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations.

Raconter l’histoire de la littérature française depuis Flaubert en ne prenant appui que sur les faits de langue et de style, tel est le projet de ce livre. Vers 1850 est en effet apparue l’idée d’une prose qui ne serait plus définie par opposition à la poésie et d’une langue littéraire qui ne serait plus le modèle du français commun mais son autre. Se croisent ici l’histoire des grands genres de cette prose (le roman, l’essai, l’autobiographie...), l’histoire de la langue française comme objet social et imaginaire (tel que le construisent, par exemple, l’école, la presse ou le discours normatif), et l’histoire de la pensée critique, esthétique et linguistique. En analysant la relation de la littérature à la langue parlée, le développement des outils permettant de représenter la pensée, l’évolution de la phrase et de l’ordre des mots, le maintien d’une langue « lyrique », l’opposition entre une langue « conservatoire» et une langue « laboratoire », les auteurs suivent près d’un siècle et demi de recherches sans lendemain ou consacrées. Ils reprennent des débats passionnés et souvent oubliés et révèlent un panorama sans équivalent de notre modernité littéraire. Flaubert, Zola, Péguy, Proust, Sartre, Barthes sont quelques-uns des héros de cette passionnante histoire, nourrie de centaines de citations puisées dans nos plus grands textes. Gilles Philippe est professeur de stylistique française des xixe et xxe siècles à l'Université Paris-III-Sorbonne Nouvelle. Julien Piat est maître de conférences en langue et stylistique françaises à l'Université Grenoble-III-Stendhal.
