Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning PDF
By:Norbert M. Seel
Published on 2011-10-05 by Springer Science & Business Media

Over the past century, educational psychologists and researchers have posited many theories to explain how individuals learn, i.e. how they acquire, organize and deploy knowledge and skills. The 20th century can be considered the century of psychology on learning and related fields of interest (such as motivation, cognition, metacognition etc.) and it is fascinating to see the various mainstreams of learning, remembered and forgotten over the 20th century and note that basic assumptions of early theories survived several paradigm shifts of psychology and epistemology. Beyond folk psychology and its naïve theories of learning, psychological learning theories can be grouped into some basic categories, such as behaviorist learning theories, connectionist learning theories, cognitive learning theories, constructivist learning theories, and social learning theories. Learning theories are not limited to psychology and related fields of interest but rather we can find the topic of learning in various disciplines, such as philosophy and epistemology, education, information science, biology, and – as a result of the emergence of computer technologies – especially also in the field of computer sciences and artificial intelligence. As a consequence, machine learning struck a chord in the 1980s and became an important field of the learning sciences in general. As the learning sciences became more specialized and complex, the various fields of interest were widely spread and separated from each other; as a consequence, even presently, there is no comprehensive overview of the sciences of learning or the central theoretical concepts and vocabulary on which researchers rely. The Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning provides an up-to-date, broad and authoritative coverage of the specific terms mostly used in the sciences of learning and its related fields, including relevant areas of instruction, pedagogy, cognitive sciences, and especially machine learning and knowledge engineering. This modern compendium will be an indispensable source of information for scientists, educators, engineers, and technical staff active in all fields of learning. More specifically, the Encyclopedia provides fast access to the most relevant theoretical terms provides up-to-date, broad and authoritative coverage of the most important theories within the various fields of the learning sciences and adjacent sciences and communication technologies; supplies clear and precise explanations of the theoretical terms, cross-references to related entries and up-to-date references to important research and publications. The Encyclopedia also contains biographical entries of individuals who have substantially contributed to the sciences of learning; the entries are written by a distinguished panel of researchers in the various fields of the learning sciences.

Psychology for Dancers PDF Free

Psychology for Dancers PDF
By:Cathy Schofield,Lucy Start
Published on 2018-08-20 by Routledge

Psychology for Dancers: Theory and Practice to Fulfil Your Potential examines how psychological theory can be related to dance practice. Aimed at the dancer who wants to maximize their potential but has no grounding in psychology, the book begins with an examination of basic psychological concepts, approaches and methods, before applying theory to dance. The book explores why dance is so important in many people’s lives: as a form of fitness, a profession, or visual entertainment. Each chapter then examines a different aspect of psychology related to dance in an applied context. Self-perception is examined as dancers are under great scrutiny; a grounded sense of self will ensure a positive perception of self-worth and body image, and suggestions are made as to how a healthy and motivational climate can be created. The book also places an emphasis on how cognitive skills are as important as technical skills, including the ability to learn and recall steps and choreography as efficiently as possible. Social factors are related to the dance context, with a discussion of effective leadership and communication skills and the importance of group cohesion. Finally, there is a review of the impact of emotions on dance practice and how best to manage these emotions. Each chapter reviews important psychological theories, offering practical suggestions on how they can be applied to dance practice. Psychology for Dancers is an invaluable resource for students, professionals, and teachers of dance.

Dancing Between Hope and Despair PDF Free

Dancing Between Hope and Despair PDF
By:Sue Wright
Published on 2016-07-08 by Macmillan International Higher Education

Why is hope so fundamental to our existence? In considering this and many other questions, this evocative book introduces the reader to the repeated shifting, or 'dance', between hope and despair that is so often encountered by practitioners working with profoundly traumatised individuals. Drawing on a broad range of theoretical perspectives and illustrated by a wealth of case studies and first-hand experiences, the book brings a sharp focus to the ways in which therapeutic relationships can draw individuals out of the constant oscillation between light and dark. It provides an insightful and thoughtful discussion not just about despair itself, but about how to be with despair: about how practitioners can help clients turn towards the experiences of emotional pain, and stand with them in the face of it. Topics covered include: • The concept of hope, and the differences between realistic and illusory hope • How trauma and attachment failure at different life stages can contribute to the loss of hope • The benefits of taking a highly relational approach to hopelessness, with an emphasis on integrating mind, body and emotions. Informed by the author's own years of experience in the field of psychotherapy, this engaging and stimulating book provides practical guidance on how students, trainees and practitioners can inspire fresh hope in deeply troubled clients.

In her unique collection of the verbal language of dance practitioners and researchers Valerie Preston-Dunlop presents a comprehensive view of people in dance: what they do, their movement, their sound, and the space in which they work - from the standpoint of the performers, choreographers, audiences, administrators, and teachers. The words and phrases of their technical and vernacular languages (which are used to communicate what is essentially a non-verbal activity) have been collected in rehearsal, classes and workshops by interviews, and from published sources. In this first collection of its kind Valerie Preston-Dunlop extends her selection of verbal language to include the various social and theatrical domains of dance.

Dance Between Two Cultures PDF Free

Dance Between Two Cultures PDF
By:William Luis
Published on 2001 by Vanderbilt University Press

Offers insights on Latino Caribbean writers born or raised in the United States who are at the vanguard of a literary movement that has captured both critical and popular interest. In this groundbreaking study, William Luis analyzes the most salient and representative narrative and poetic works of the newest literary movement to emerge in Spanish American and U.S. literatures. The book is divided into three sections, each focused on representative Puerto Rican American, Cuban American, and Dominican American authors. Luis traces the writers' origins and influences from the nineteenth century to the present, focusing especially on the contemporary works of Oscar Hijuelos, Julia Alvarez, Cristina Garcia, and Piri Thomas, among others. While engaging in close readings of the texts, Luis places them in a broader social, historical, political, and racial perspective to expose the tension between text and context. As a group, Latino Caribbeans write an ethnic literature in English that is born of their struggle to forge an identity separate from both the influences of their parents' culture and those of the United States. For these writers, their parents' country of origin is a distant memory. They have developed a culture of resistance and a language that mediates between their parents' identity and the culture that they themselves live in. Latino Caribbeans are engaged in a metaphorical dance with Anglo Americans as the dominant culture. Just as that dance represents a coming together of separate influences to make a unique art form, so do both Hispanic and North American cultures combine to bring a new literature into being. This new body of literature helps us to understand not only the adjustments Latino Caribbean cultures have had to make within the larger U.S. environment but also how the dominant culture has been affected by their presence.

Dancing the Data PDF
By:Carl Bagley,Mary Beth Cancienne
Published on 2002 by Peter Lang Pub Incorporated

Dancing the Data and its interrelated CD-ROM, Dancing the Data Too, show the ways in which educational research and the visual and performing arts can embrace each other to engender a culture of feeling and meaning and in so doing evoke new ways of knowing, learning, and teaching. It draws on the artistic mediums of dance, collage, poetry, music, and drama and invites the reader to engage with the educational research endeavors of the contributors as they seek to move beyond the traditions of established approaches to represent and reflect on their work in artistic forms. Dancing the Data seeks to open up conversational beginnings with teachers, researchers, and students, and to tempt them to discuss and reflect on the ways in which established methodological and pedagogical boundaries might be crossed and new ways of seeing and doing valued and explored. Contents: Carl Bagley/Mary Beth Cancienne: Educational Research and Intertextual Forms of (Re)Presentation: The Case for Dancing the Data--Celeste Snowber: Bodydance: Enfleshing Soulful Inquiry through Improvisations--Jim Mienczakowski/Lynn Smith/Steve Morgan: Seeing Words--Hearing Feelings: Ethnodrama and the Performance of Data--Dwight Rogers/Paul Frellick/Leslie Babinski: Staging a Study--Performing the Personal and Professional Struggles of Beginning Teachers--Terry Jenoure: Sweeping the Temple: A Perform-for the legal content in his works, which found fit audiences among jurists at the Inns of Court law schools and in King James' Court. Shakespeare pleased the king on these matters enough to have him command his plays to be repeated on an occasion. For himself, Shakespeare learned from his own writing how to deal with the languageof law theoretically and conceptually with such concepts as equity and mercy in Chancery. He used his own family life, personal documents, and legal problems to give impetus to his version of borrowed characters, plots, plays, and history. These personal events, from the placement of the references, give his plays, which sometimes end with a fictionalized, wish-fulfillment, or literary compensation, an autobiographical initial compulsion. - From November 1604 until Shrove Tuesday 1605 the Master of the Revels chose to stage seven of Shakespeare's plays, all dealing with justice and law, equity and mercy, courts and jurisdiction: 'Othello', 'Merry Wives of Windsor', 'Measure for Measure', 'Comedy of Errors', 'Loves Labours Lost', 'Henry V', and 'Merchant of Venice'. W. Nicholas Knight argues this was no coincidence: Tilney used the plays to teach the proper use of law to the new King James. In this pioneering study of Shakespeare's life and work, Knight discovers new sources for the plays--the lawsuits and family concerns of Shakespeare himself, matters which may well have inspired Shakespeare then and heighten certain fresh thematics now. This is a unique work of legal history and theater criticism showing how each may illuminate the other. (Arthur F. Kinney, Director, Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies, University of Massachusetts, Amberst) - W. Nicholas Knight has made exciting discoveries where law and literature intersect in Shakespeare's plays. This book persuades me that the 'allegory' Shakespeare made of his life carries important and dynamic traces of the troubles, legal and familial, that beset the playwright's daily thoughts in the 1590s and beyond. Thisis a pioneering work of scholarship and detection in the field! (Tony Connor, Department of English, Wesleyan University, Connecticut)|
